Extension Springs
Ashfield Springs manufactures extension springs to customer specification, supplying high-quality tension springs to OEMs, procurement teams and MRO buyers across a broad range of sectors. We are genuine manufacturers, not distributors: every spring is made in our Nottinghamshire factory from wire diameters of 0.1mm to 8.00mm, with no reliance on outsourcing and the lead time certainty that brings.
We hold over 250,000 extension springs in stock for same-day dispatch, and for custom designs we offer lead times of just 10 to 15 working days, with urgent small-batch and prototype orders often completed considerably faster.
Extension Springs and Tension Springs: Applications and Configurations
Extension springs (also known as tension springs) are close-coiled helical springs that work in tension, designed to resist pulling forces and return components to their original position when the load is removed. They are used in industrial machinery, agricultural equipment, electronic devices, safety systems and a wide variety of assemblies where a controlled return force is required. End geometry, initial tension, wire diameter and material grade are all specified to the demands of the application.
Custom Extension Spring End Configurations
The end type is critical to how an extension spring integrates with your assembly. We produce extension springs with a wide range of end configurations, including:
Machine loops or hooks
Extended loops or hooks
Double loops
Crossover loops
Swivel hook ends
Custom ends to drawing
If you have a specific loop geometry, hook angle or extended end requirement, our technical team is happy to advise on the most effective design for your application.
Materials and Finishes
Extension springs are available in a range of materials to suit your application, environmental conditions and cost requirements:
Carbon steel (hard drawn and pre-galv coated)
Alloy steel (chrome vanadium and silicon chrome)
Stainless steel (various grades including 302, 304 and 316)
Non-ferrous alloys on request
Finishes available include plain, protective, and decorative options such as zinc plating, delta tone, and delta seal, as well as shot peening and vibratory deburring, where required.
Flexible Batch Sizes for Prototype, Development and Production
We manufacture extension springs in flexible batch sizes to suit your requirements, whether you are at the prototype and approval stage, running a development programme or sourcing for full production. We have the capacity to respond efficiently at every point of the product lifecycle, and our manufacturing process is designed to accommodate both small specialist batches and high-volume scheduled supply contracts.
