Ashfield Springs operates a purpose-built spring manufacturing facility in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire, equipped with CNC spring coiling machines, CNC spring end grinding machines and CNC wire forming machines. We have invested over one million pounds in our production capability, with a continued programme of capital investment aimed at improving capacity, reducing set-up times and tightening the tolerances we can hold across the full wire diameter range.
Our factory was designed from the outset to allow the optimum number of orders to flow seamlessly through every production stage: from coiling and grinding through to finishing and despatch, minimising the delays and bottlenecks that affect less purpose-built facilities. Every machine listed on this page is operated by trained, experienced spring makers as part of an ISO 9001 certified quality management system.
CNC Spring Manufacturing: Coiling, Grinding and Wire Forming
Our production equipment covers three core spring manufacturing processes: CNC spring coiling for compression, extension and torsion springs; CNC spring end grinding for compression springs requiring closed and ground ends; and CNC wire forming for bespoke wire form components. The combination of these capabilities under one roof, with no outsourcing at any stage, gives us full control over quality, lead time and specification compliance.
The investment in CNC technology across all three processes means reduced set-up times compared to cam-operated machinery, faster changeover between jobs, and tighter dimensional consistency across production runs. For procurement teams, this translates directly into shorter lead times on custom orders and lower risk of out-of-tolerance supply.
CNC Spring Coiling Machines: Compression, Extension and Torsion Springs
Our CNC spring coiling capacity covers compression springs, extension springs and torsion springs across a wire diameter range of 0.1mm to 25.4mm. The combination of high-speed production coilers for volume work and semi-automatic machines for large wire and low-volume runs means we can match the right equipment to your requirement, whether that is a scheduled annual programme of small wire compression springs or an urgent batch of heavy-duty large wire springs for a breakdown situation.

The Wafios FSE 33 is a high-speed CNC compression spring coiler controlled by the latest touchscreen technology, capable of producing right-hand and left-hand wound compression springs with high accuracy and consistent quality across extended production runs. The CNC control system allows rapid parameter adjustment and repeatable set-up, reducing the time between jobs and the scrap associated with manual machine setting.

The Bobbio CNC 800s delivers high coiling speeds combined with an integrated digital length control device, ensuring consistent free length across every spring in a production batch. This machine is particularly suited to compression springs in the medium wire diameter range where both throughput and dimensional precision are critical.
CNC Spring End Grinding Machines: Precision Closed and Ground Ends
Compression springs supplied with closed and ground ends require a dedicated grinding operation after coiling to achieve a flat, square end face. The quality of the ground end directly affects how the spring sits in its assembly, the load distribution under compression and the length tolerance of the finished component. Our investment in multiple CNC downfeed grinders gives us the capacity and the tolerance capability to meet demanding end-use specifications.

Dorn DR450/VE CNC Downfeed Spring End Grinder (Multiple Units).
The G+M Dorn DR450/VE CNC downfeed grinder is our primary spring end grinding machine, with multiple units operated as part of our grinding department. The CNC downfeed control achieves a length tolerance of ±0.25mm on springs up to 8mm wire diameter offering a significant improvement over manual grinding processes and sufficient for the majority of OEM and precision industrial applications we supply.
Investment in additional Dorn DR450/VE units over successive years reflects the growth in our compression spring volumes and our commitment to maintaining grinding capacity in line with coiling output, eliminating the bottleneck that grinding can create in high-volume spring manufacturing.

Dorn DR300 CNC Spring End Grinder
The Dorn DR300 provides complementary grinding capacity for smaller wire diameter compression springs, supporting throughput across the full programme alongside the DR450/VE fleet. The combination of DR450/VE and DR300 units gives us a grinding department matched to the full wire diameter range of our coiling capability.
CNC Wire Forming Machines: Bespoke Wire Forms to 10mm Wire
Our CNC wire forming capability allows us to produce two- and three-dimensional wire forms up to 10mm wire diameter as part of our standard production offering. Wire forms produced on CNC equipment benefit from the same short set-up time advantage as our spring coiling fleet, making small and medium-volume wire form batches economically viable alongside volume production runs.

The Robomac 310 CNC wire forming machine produces two- and three-dimensional wire forms in material up to 10mm diameter. Its short set-up time makes it suited to both large and small production quantities, and it supports our wire forms capability across all sectors from bespoke industrial clips and retaining forms to custom assemblies for automotive, electronics and fluid power applications.
Continued Investment in Spring Manufacturing Capability
Since 2010, Ashfield Springs has made successive investments in production equipment as part of a deliberate strategy to improve capacity, reduce set-up times and tighten manufacturing tolerances. Key investments include the installation of FactoryMaster production planning software for real-time shop floor data capture, multiple CNC spring coilers, successive additions to the grinding department, and CNC wire forming equipment. The result is a production facility with greater flexibility, shorter lead times and tighter quality control than at any point in our history.
