Torsion Springs

Ashfield Springs manufactures torsion springs to customer specification from our purpose-built facility in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire. Because torsion springs are available in such a wide variety of configurations, we do not stock them as standard; we have the capacity and machinery to manufacture any design in flexible batch sizes, with the short lead times that busy procurement teams require.

With over 40 years of manufacturing experience and ISO 9001 certification, we supply torsion springs to OEMs, MRO buyers and engineering teams across a broad range of sectors, including fluid power, industrial machinery, electronics, elevating platforms and hygiene equipment.

Torsion Spring Specifications: Coil Direction, Leg Configuration and Material

Torsion springs are specified by wire diameter, coil diameter, number of active coils, leg length, leg angle and direction of wind. They work by applying a rotational or twisting force, storing energy when deflected about their axis and releasing it when the load is removed. They are widely used in mechanisms requiring a controlled return torque, including door handle assemblies, door latch springs, hinges, switches, gates and actuators, as well as in a broad range of industrial and OEM assemblies.

Custom Torsion Springs Manufactured to Drawing or Sample

We manufacture torsion springs on the latest CNC spring-forming machines. If it is technically feasible, we can produce it. Our team is experienced in interpreting customer drawings and samples, and our technical specialists are available to advise on spring design, material selection and end configuration to ensure your spring performs reliably in service.

Leg configurations are produced to customer specification, including straight legs, angled legs and formed ends, in both left-hand and right-hand coil directions.

Materials and Finishes

requirements, environmental conditions and budget:

  • Carbon spring steels (hard drawn and pre-galv coated)

  • Alloy steels (chrome vanadium and silicon chrome)

  • Stainless steel (various grades)

We can supply springs with a plain finish or in a range of protective and decorative finishes, including zinc plating, delta tone and delta seal. Shot peening is available for applications requiring improved fatigue life.

Short Lead Times on Custom Torsion Springs

For custom torsion springs, we typically offer a lead time of 10 to 15 working days from receipt of a confirmed order, with urgent requirements often turned around considerably faster. We manufacture in flexible batch sizes to suit your programme, whether that is a small initial batch for design approval, a development run or full-scale production supply. We are a practical partner at every stage of your product lifecycle.

ISO 9001 Certified Torsion Spring Manufacturer

All torsion springs are manufactured under our ISO 9001 certified quality management system, with a focus on zero rejections and on-time delivery. As members of the Institute of Spring Technology, British Valve and Actuator Association and the British Fluid Power Association, we work to the highest standards of spring manufacturing best practice.

Technical Description

A torsion spring is a spring manufactured from circular, rectangular or square material which can be open or close coiled which offers resistance to a force applied around its longitude axis.

A torsion spring can be manufactured with many different leg positions and end forms, coiled in either direction and are used for a variety of common products such as industrial doors, electrical equipment and white goods.
