Ashfield Springs is a family-owned spring manufacturer based in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire. We have been manufacturing precision springs for OEMs, procurement teams and MRO buyers since 1983. Our track record of over 40 years of building relationships, developing expertise and manufacturing capability allows us to deliver consistently high quality with the flexibility and responsiveness that larger group-owned manufacturers cannot always match.
We manufacture compression springs, extension springs, torsion springs, wire forms and hose protection springs from wire diameters of 0.1mm to 8.00mm, from our purpose-built facility one mile from Junction 28 of the M1. Every spring is manufactured with the care and attention expected of an ISO:9001 company and supplied to British Standard Tolerances.
A Family Business Built on Quality and Long-Term Relationships
Ashfield Springs was founded in 1983 by Terry Smith and Gordon Chatterton-Greenwood, who brought together formidable commercial acumen and deep spring-making expertise built over many years in the industry. From a start in a local authority unit in Huthwaite, the company grew steadily into the purpose-built facility it occupies today, a factory designed to allow the optimum flow of orders through every production stage.
The business remains family-owned, with Bryan Smith, Terry's son, who worked within the company for 22 years before taking over as Managing Director leading a team with a combined 250 years or more of spring manufacturing experience. That depth of experience, retained within a stable, independent business, is one of the reasons our customers stay with us for decades. Our quality and on-time delivery performance rating of more than 99% is built on people who know their craft and care about the outcome.
What Sets Ashfield Springs Apart
There are many spring manufacturers in the UK. These are the things that genuinely distinguish us:
We’re the only UK spring manufacturer with membership of both the British Fluid Power Association (BFPA) and the British Valve and Actuator Association (BVAA), a unique position reflecting 30+ years of supplying hydraulic and pneumatic OEMs to A-class standard
ISO 9001-certified quality management and ISO 14001-certified environmental management, both maintained since their first achievement and subject to ongoing improvement.
We are a full member of the Institute of Spring Technology (IST) giving us access to all of their services. Whether this is failure analysis, fatigue testing, or shot peening of manufactured springs - we’re able to take advantage of these services on behalf of our clients.
A purpose-built factory designed for efficient order flow, supported by FactoryMaster MRP production planning software and CNC coiling, grinding and wire forming equipment
Same-day response to all enquiries, and standard custom spring lead times of 10 to 15 working days which is significantly shorter than many competitors
A financially independent business: no group-level ownership changes, no shifting priorities, and a direct relationship between the people you speak to and the people who make your springs

As BFPA and BVAA members, we engage with standards, training, and technical developments across the fluid power and valve sectors. As members of the Institute of Spring Technology and UK Spring Manufacturers Association, we maintain connection with the best practice and technical knowledge of the spring manufacturing industry. We actively contribute to working groups and benefit from the collective expertise of our sector.
